This Holiday Season, Give the Gift of Sustainability
Gisselle Delgadillo ‘20
It’s the most wonderful time of the year (I hope you sang that because I did). Holiday season is approaching and with it comes endless laughs, smiles, and love. However, we can’t forget that there is also a spike in the amount of waste we send to the landfill. In fact, household waste in the United States increases by about one million extra tons between Thanksgiving Day and New Year’s Day! Don’t worry--there are many steps we can take to reduce our waste and consumption. It’s the thought that counts!
REUSE: Gather old newspapers, coupons, magazines, posters, and calendars that you no longer use and upcycle them into custom wrapping paper. Save money and reduce your consumption at the same time!
REDUCE: Add even more suspense and excitement to gift exchanges by hiding items around home and providing clues about their location. This way, there is no need to add any extra packaging or wrapping material to an item and we can avoid consuming more material.
RECYCLE: If you do decide to purchase items to wrap gifts, seek out recyclable materials, like wrapping material made out of paper, or use construction paper to make ribbons and bows.
RESPECT the arts and crafts and cooking skills within you and consider making your own gifts.
