Email security improvements in Summer 2019

This summer, the Cyberinfrastructure Technologies team is working with SCU’s Information Security Office on a set of changes to improve security around how members of the SCU community send and receive email.

Upcoming change:
- Add warning text for messages that are from outside scu.edu.

Completed changes:
July: Add warning banners to messages that seem to be spoofing either our domain (scu.edu) or names from our directory.
July: Add two-factor authentication (2FA) to G Suite. More information is available on SCU's 2FA page.
June: Refine spam filtering.

When you see these warnings, be sure to take extra care when deciding whether to open attachments, click on links, or respond to the message.

Google Group management settings have changed

In June 2019, Google changed the group-management settings for Google Groups. Google made groups simpler to manage by combining settings that have similar functions, and removing some rarely-used settings.

These changes affect both new and existing groups.

Because settings are being combined, some users might lose permissions to manage group members or content, depending on the permissions they have now. Group owners will continue to have the ability to correct users' permissions after the update.
