Acts of Discrimination Update

Oct. 12: Vice Provost of Student Life Jeanne Rosenberger updates the campus community about acts of discrimination.

Vice Provost of Student Life Jeanne Rosenberger updates the campus community about acts of discrimination.

Dear members of the Santa Clara community,

I am providing an update regarding the investigation into the inflammatory writings on a bulletin board and a poster inside an elevator in Casa Italiana that I first communicated on Sunday, October 9. At that time, I reported that in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 8, community facilitators in Casa Italiana noticed disturbing vandalism on the 4th-floor community bulletin board and on a poster inside the Casa elevator.

The University takes alleged violations of the Student Conduct Code very seriously. An important development in the ongoing investigation is that Campus Safety Services has identified the students who may be responsible for these acts. Following the investigation, there will be a university conduct hearing to determine the appropriate sanctions for anyone found responsible for violating the Student Conduct Code.

In a related inquiry, the University is working to determine how surveillance video from the ongoing confidential investigation was disseminated without authorization. The University uses limited video surveillance to protect our students, faculty, staff, and guests while respecting their privacy.

As Fr. Engh stated in his letter to the editor of The Santa Clara on October 6: “We must continue to work together to make Santa Clara an institution where we all feel we belong and of which we can be proud. We aspire to promote an atmosphere of inclusion, one in which we celebrate the differences of one another in the same breath as our similarities. We aim to facilitate an environment of respect: of ideas, culture, each other, and the physical space we share. And we seek to create a community of integrity and solidarity, where each of us is valued for who we are.”

Together with Fr. Engh and Dennis Jacobs, I invite you to join us on Tuesday, October 18, at 7 pm in the Mayer Theatre for Bronco Forum: Dialogue with Administration co-sponsored with the leaders of Unity 4. This forum has been refocused to provide an opportunity to discuss recent campus events and how we move forward as a community.

If you have any information about this incident, please contact Campus Safety Services at 408-554-4441. Alternatively, an anonymous report can be submitted via ethicspoint.com.

I will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.

Sincerely,
Jeanne Rosenberger
Vice Provost for Student Life
