Preparation
As a member of the Santa Clara University community, you know that Jesuit education strives to create "men and women for others," and, in its combination of the intellectual and affective aspects of an education, it aims to educate the "whole" person. As President Paul Locatelli has written, "A Santa Clara education retains the orientation of an ethical education found in the Renaissance humanist schools with a religious orientation instilled by the early Jesuits, as well as in 19th century American colleges. At the same time, it strives for the intellectual rigor, critical thinking, and scholarly and professional excellence represented in the American research university, because academic excellence in research and teaching are critical to solving the complex problems this world faces," (Santa Clara Magazine, Winter, 2003). The Office of Fellowships will help intellectually gifted Santa Clara students to develop and to utilize their talents so that they have more to give to others. If you commit yourself to these three goals--excellence in service, in academic and extracurricular life--you may well become an outstanding candidate for one of the many fellowship opportunities that exist at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
