Dear Colleagues —
I am thrilled to share that we successfully hosted the third annual Career Clarity Retreat on January 3-4 at the beautiful Vallombrosa Center in Menlo Park.
24 students participated and enjoyed a weekend full of reflection and discernment activities expertly facilitated by Vania Tong, Myriam Bartz, and Victor Lemus with support from Trushika Desai, MA'27 (a graduate intern in the Career Center studying Counseling Psychology), Ellen Kim (Career Coach for the SCU Graduate Business School) and Maria Denise Cuenca '26 and Nicole Shellito '28 (undergraduate student leaders and former retreat participants).

What students are saying:
"I now have a clearer definition of success and have an action plan on how can I carry and uphold my goals, values, and taking care of myself at the same time. Listening to all of the leaders, peers, and panelists, and of course to my inner voice, I am now (or I can say) off to a great start ... I am so grateful and so privileged to be in this retreat."
—
"This was a great opportunity to start creating actionable plans and recognize the root cause of procrastination. I especially benefitted from meeting other students in similar positions as myself. I feel so far behind that it's difficult to get started, so it was affirming to talk to others who have also gone through several "pivots". The 1:1 career counseling was also very helpful."
—
Like last year, we collaborated with Campus Ministry to develop an agenda focused on giving students tools and strategies to navigate feelings of stress, anxiety, and ambiguity when thinking about their career and their future. The retreat also included a panel discussion with distinguished Santa Clara alumni Demetria Quijada '21, MA'24 and Jeff Jacobs '89.
Financially, this retreat was made possible by a grant from the Division of Mission and Ministry and additional funds provided by Campus Ministry. We'd like to extend a special thank you to Fr. Matt Carnes, Mike Nuttall, Aaron Willis and Victor Lemus for their support. (Read Victor Lemus' recent reflection.)
😮 Did you know? The Career Clarity Retreat was recognized last year by the National Association of Colleges and Employers with an Honorable Mention in the "Career Services Excellence - Large College" category.
Curious to learn more about the retreat? Email Vania Tong at vtong@scu.edu.
As always, I look forward to working together to deliver on the promise of higher education for all of our students: a good job, social capital, and economic mobility in pursuit of a more humane, just and sustainable world.

Which Companies Receive the Most Applications from Students?
Handshake is a powerful tool that gives the Career Center actionable insights into the interests and activities of our students. For example, through Handshake, we're able to track which companies students submit the most applications to for jobs and internships.
The figure below shows us student application data from the past 6 months. We can filter this data by major and by school/college to get a pulse on what types of companies our different student populations are interested in. It also helps us prioritize new companies to reach out to.

Curious to see which companies are most popular with your students? Email Dylan Houle at dhoule@scu.edu. We'd be happy to run a custom report for you.

Use a Handshake RSS feed to surface opportunities for current students and to give prospective students and families a peek behind the Handshake curtain.
Check out how we're using an RSS feed on our events page to highlight upcoming employer events.

Student Spotlight: Erik Keifer '26

Erik Keifer '26 is a general engineering major who has found career success by using the many resources Santa Clara has to offer. As Erik prepares to graduate this June, we invited him to share his reflections for our Student Spotlight series.
What advice would you give to students who may be curious or nervous about using the Career Center?
I would tell them to book an appointment and follow the advice their advisor gives them. The Career Center gives you the tools and direction, but you just have to put in the work. With consistency, hard work, and determination, you really can get better and see results. .
How has the Career Center helped you achieve your career goals?
The Career Center has helped me a lot with interviewing and networking. Through career coaching and their advice, I learned how to approach interviews more confidently and talk about my experiences in a clear, structured way. Because of what I learned, I’m now heading into a final round interview which I was able to get because of the guidance I received from the Career Center. Overall, they helped me feel much more prepared and confident throughout the job search process. .
Erik, congratulations on your upcoming graduation and all you have accomplished here at Santa Clara!

Student Spotlight: Amjad Rehawi '29

Amjad Rehawi '29, is an engineering major who has found career confidence by using the many resources Santa Clara has to offer. As Amjad prepares to finish his first year at Santa Clara, we invited him to share his reflections for our Student Spotlight series.
What advice would you give to students who may be curious or nervous about using the Career Center?
Do not hesitate, get out of your comfort zone, the sooner you take your first steps the earlier you will get to your goal. SCU just happens to provide an entire department/organization that is a literal walking aid in the madness jungle of employment. [The] Career Center made it seem like a walk in the park.
How has the Career Center helped you achieve your career goals?
[The] Career Center helped in many ways. It gave me an insight into what career path I need to take, what classes I should prioritize, what projects to pursue. Essentially, over a number of talks and advising sessions with a number of different Career Center representatives, [the] Career Center helped me shape my employment strategy as well as helped shape my skillset and portfolio to something that employers see attractive and something that can give me independence and freedom to move around.
Amjad, kudos to you for getting an early start on accomplishing your career goals!

BOOMSHAKALAKA! 🏀🔥
On Wednesday, January 14, the Career Center team took over the jumbotron at the men's basketball game vs University of the Pacific and let’s just say... we were on fire!

While the Broncos were busy sinking threes, we were busy busting our signature moves:
🙌 The Assist: Connecting students to our massive alumni network.
🙌 The Rebound: Helping students pivot when they change their career goals.
🙌 The Alley-oop: Passing the perfect job lead to a student.
We might not have a 40-inch vertical, but when it comes to career coaching, we never miss from downtown. Up your game and visit the Career Center today: https://www.scu.edu/careercenter/
🏀🔥 Thank you to Carlos Garcia and Enrique René Ortiz for helping bring this idea to life.
