When it comes to evaluating the performance of our teams, direct and honest feedback, delivered thoughtfully and with care, is essential. Candid assessments certainly should recognize team members for their accomplishments. It’s equally important to lean in to the difficult conversations and provide clear and meaningful feedback when improvement is needed. Doing so gives an employee the opportunity to improve and succeed in their role and also can enhance trust and engagement. As we enter performance assessment season, keep in mind author/academic/podcaster Brené Brown’s sage advice: “Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.” - Kelly Douglas, General Counsel |
