MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
Dear Alumni, Over the weekend, we celebrated the 250 year anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. To help commemorate this special occasion, I was honored to be invited by the federal judges of the Northern District of California to offer my reflections on the Declaration in the San Jose Courthouse and to join the courthouse family in a collective reading of its stirring words. I shared that the Declaration is of course a powerful testament to the Rule of Law, which includes a 27 count indictment of the King for violating the Rule of Law’s fundamental precepts, including denial of fair elections, obstruction of the legislative process, and usurpation of an independent judiciary. But I also shared that the Declaration proclaims that the Rule of Law and even the consent of the governed will only secure a just society when they live out our common creed that every human being is created equal and endowed with natural rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Living out our common creed requires not just our independence, but our interdependence. The Declaration established an intergenerational covenant that creates sacred duties on the government, but also on the governed. All of us must pledge our patient attentiveness to each other, as well as our honor, humility, vigilance, prudence, civic education, civic engagement, civic virtue, and dedication to the common good. These ideals are not static or transactional, but living relational commitments that call on each generation to reaffirm, protect, and strengthen what we have built together...Continue Reading

Last month, an incredible group of Santa Clara Law alumni joined the Supreme Court Bar after being sworn in before the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. Among them was Alex Louie, J.D. '20, Counsel at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Louie shares reflections on the occasion and his career below. "My great-grandfather and my grandfather came to the United States in the early 20th Century, and were subject to severe discrimination and the Exclusion Acts. I felt compelled to become a member of the Supreme Court bar because it would represent the ultimate circle, how their descendant would become an officer of the Court that eventually guaranteed their rights. The most memorable part was attending the Court session, where eight of the justices were present, and hearing my name called out in the highest Court in the country." "My observation is to be prepared for anything. I never intended to be a litigator, and didn't take any trial prep classes. Yet, most of the legal roles I have taken since graduation involved working in the courtroom."
Support Our ProgramsAlumni Mentor Program
The Office of Career Management (OCM) is seeking alumni volunteers to support our entering class as a 1L Mentor. The purpose of this program is to help 1Ls acclimate to law school and foster a sense of belonging and connection to the broader law school community. Each alumni volunteer will be assigned 1-2 1Ls and asked to meet with them at least once per semester (Fall and Spring) of their 1L year. Students will be matched with alumni based on practice areas of interest. Mentoring can occur in person or virtually and OCM will guide you and provide tips on facilitating your mentoring meetings. You may meet with your students individually or as a group, based on your preference and availability. Post-Bar Public Defender Fellowship Program
The newly created Santa Clara Law Post-Bar Public Defender Fellowship Program will provide financial support to recent graduates who have secured a post-bar law clerk position with a public defender’s office. Additionally, the fellowship will bridge the ever-growing financial gap between bar study and full-time employment, enabling more graduates to enter and remain in public defense careers. |
