Dear Campus Community,
As our region prepares to host the upcoming Super Bowl events, we anticipate larger-than-typical crowds, traffic, and congestion in and around campus, which may have some impact on the University’s operations. Our primary goal during this time is to keep all members of our community safe.
Modified Building Access Feb. 4 to Feb. 9
To support this goal, we are implementing enhanced safety measures beginning at 7 a.m. Wed., Feb. 4, and going through 11 p.m. Mon., Feb. 9, after which we will return to our normal protocols. During this period, all faculty, staff, and students will be required to use an ACCESS card for entry into their respective work, class, or residence hall facilities. This requires that everyone carry their SCU identification—either a physical ACCESS card or mobile credential—at all times while on campus.
These measures are intended to provide security for our community.
Access to campus buildings will be as follows:
- The Learning Commons and Benson Center will be accessible via ACCESS card/mobile credential during published building hours, with Learning Commons closing one hour early (1 a.m.) for users staying past midnight on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday nights.
- Classroom buildings will be accessible via ACCESS card/mobile credential from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Buildings that will remain open to the public include the de Saisset Museum and Mission Church. These locations will not require use of an ACCESS card for entry. The Malley Center will also be open during its normal business hours. All non-public buildings that currently require an ACCESS card for entry, such as residence halls, will continue to do so. Please do not allow individuals to come in behind you without tagging in with their ACCESS card.
- Buildings not specified above will be locked and not accessible unless faculty, staff, or students have existing access to that facility. Visitors may need to call the person they are visiting to gain access to such buildings.
Academic Continuity and Flexible Work Arrangements
As you plan your schedule for this period, please keep the following in mind:
- Academic Continuity: Classes will continue as usual. Faculty will have the discretion to manage their classes as they deem appropriate, which could include holding class virtually. Faculty will receive additional resources from the Office of the Provost later today.
- Flexible Work Schedules: Supervisors are encouraged to support flexible work schedules for staff positions, where feasible. Specific arrangements regarding remote work or adjusted hours should be coordinated with and approved by a worker’s supervisor to ensure business continuity.
- Essential Operations: While many roles are conducive to remote work, others require an on-site presence to keep the University running. Supervisors will make determinations based on the specific needs of their department.
For roles that require an on-site presence, we encourage supervisors to consider flexible start and end times where possible to allow staff to travel outside of peak congestion hours.
Protocols in Case of Immigration Enforcement Activity
We also acknowledge that in the current national environment, there are concerns about the possibility of immigration enforcement on our campus. While we have no indication that this will occur, we want to reaffirm that the University has established protocols in place to respond to the presence of immigration enforcement authorities at Santa Clara.
As we work to protect the campus and create a safe and supportive environment for all, we also look forward to the joy, vibrancy, and energy that the Super Bowl brings to our region. We encourage everyone to remain attentive, look out for one another, and remember: “If you see something, say something.”
Thank you for your cooperation and shared commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our Bronco Community.
Sincerely,
