This instrument was made by James W. Queen, Philadelphia. Queen (1811-1890) was probably the premier American supplier of science teaching instruments in North America. He was apprenticed to John McAllister (1753-1830), the leading instrument dealer in Philadelphia in the early decades of the nineteenth century, then went into business for himself in 1853 under the company name James W. Queen. In 1859 he took a partner (Samuel Fox) and changed the name of his business to James W. Queen and Company. Queen retired in 1870.
