Harvesting Potatoes, 1996
Later in April Alvaro returns to Tiwanaku with his wife and daughters
to help his parents and siblings harvest the crops. With a trowel
in hand, family members work side-by-side for days at a time, methodically
digging each furrow until all the potatoes are harvested. Alvaro's
youngest daughter watches the elders work while her sisters and cousins
tend to a herd of sheep. In the campo everyone has a responsibility
to make the family farm run effectively. Young children are often
charged with watching herds of animals, while parents and other adults
carryout the more difficult and laborious chores.
