Cowell Student Health Center

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use the health center if I don't have the school health insurance?

A: Yes. Your undergraduate and law school tuition entitles you to unlimited visits with a doctor or nurse practitioner without charge. Graduate or part-time students may elect to pay $90 per quarter which entitles them to the same services.

Q: Why can't I have antibiotics for my cold? My family doctor always gives them to me.

A: Most colds and upper respiratory infections are viral. Viruses do not respond to antibiotics and can actually make your symptoms worse. Antibiotics are indicated if you have a secondary bacterial infection such as sinusitis or bacterial bronchitis. Antibiotics are often over-prescribed to placate patients. This practice has led to resistant strains of bacteria which are extremely difficult and sometimes impossible to treat. There is a video on antibiotic resistance available for viewing at Cowell.

Q: Can anyone, other than a doctor, write a prescription when I need one?

A: Yes. Nurse practitioners can also prescribe.
