Explore with Me Docent Intership
The Explore with Me Docent (EWM) internship program, which was created in partnership with SCU's Department of Art and Art History, provides a great opportunity for students to gain practical experience in a museum setting. Students from across the University are eligible to enroll in the internship program to earn course credit. As interns, the participating students learn to give engaging, interactive tours by asking questions and facilitating conversation. They also have the opportunity to see behind-the-scenes at the Museum and to learn about the content of the exhibitions. EWM is a great way for students to broaden their understanding of the museum profession, to improve their public speaking skills, and to increase their knowledge of art and history.
Explore with Me docents spend four weeks honing their touring skills. They learn to look at art with a critical eye, to ask leading questions, and to engage visitors in discussions about art that are stimulating but not intimidating. Following their training, docents give a minimum of three hours of their time conducting tours for groups of all sizes and ages. As part of the internship, docents also participate in Museum-sponsored events, take a trip to a local Bay Area museum, and complete a short written assignment reflecting on their experiences as a docent.
The Explore with Me Docent internship is offered each academic quarter. To find out how to enroll or to learn more about the program, contact Lindsey Kouvaris, Curator of Exhibits and Collections, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 408.554.4528.
