Grants, Awards, and Publications
Chris Kitts (Mechanical Engineering) was an invited speaker at the Oceans Innovations Conference last month, which was held in St. John's, Newfoundland. His talk featured work on autonomous shallow-water bathymetry and on the use of multi-robot clusters for marine applications.
Ed Maurer (Civil Engineering) gave a presentation last month entitled "The Science and Modeling of Climate Change" to the San Mateo County League of Women Voters in San Mateo. He is also co-author of a report entitled "Climate change could pose major risk to one-third of U.S. counties by 2050, which was featured in the October edition of Civil Engineering Magazine.
Sarah Kate Wilson (Electrical Engineering) gave a presentation entitled “MIMO and OFDM: Mirror Images” at the Joint Workshop on Coding and Communications (JWCC) last month in Santa Stefano Belbo, Italy.
Sally Wood (Electrical Engineering) has been named chair of the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr., Education Medal Committee and a member of IEEE Medal Council which meets annually to discuss the recipients and alternates of IEEE Medals, the highest honor within the IEEE awards hierarchy.
Toshishige Yamada (Center for Nanostructures) gave an invited talk, "Modeling of Carbon Nanotube Ultracapacitor," which was co-authored by Ph.D. student A. Orphanou and Cary Yang (Center for Nanostructures), at the 2010 IEEE Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Conference in Monterey last month.
Yuling Yan (Bioengineering) co-authored a paper entitled, “Spatio-temporal Processing of Massive Glottic Images from High-speed Videoendoscopy,” which was accepted for oral presentation at the SPIE BiOS: Biomedical Optics Symposium. It will be held in January at SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco. Yan also co-wrote an article entitled “Optical Switches: High-Contrast Imaging in Living Cells and Tissue,” which was accepted for publication in Biochemical Journal.
