SCU in El Salvador: A Quest for Justice
Tuesday, May 27
noon - 1:30 p.m.
Williman Room, Benson Memorial Center
This special Literary Cuisine will begin with a brief discussion of the educational vision the Jesuits had for the University of Central America (San Salvador). From there it will focus on connections Santa Clara has developed over the years with El Salvador. Fr. Michael McCarthy, S.J., Executive Director of the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education, will talk about the University of Central America's involvement in the Salvadorean struggle for justice and introduce One Day of Life, a novel by Salvadorean author Manlio Argueta. The renowned novel describes the life of a family on the eve of the civil war against a repressive regime. Jake Schneider, Director of Immersions, and Jelena Radovic Fanta, Anthropology lecturer, will discuss the innovative SCU immersion program in El Salvador and the transformative experience of participating students. Some students will also share their experiences.
