Google can act as a dictionary. In the search box, just type define: followed by your keyword. Ex: define: laser

*A calculator Google can also act as a calculator. In the search box,enter for example: 44 +238 * 7= and Google will provide the answer
*The home page of a company, an organization or an association Use a search engine such as Google
*Somebody's telephone number or email address Remember that there is no single comprehensive listing of email addresses or telephone numbers on the web, but there are several directories available.  A list of the major directories on the web is at:  www.teldir.com
*Information in a foreign language Use Google in advanced search mode and limit your search by the language of your choice. There are also search engines in other languages such as Terra for Spanish (www.terra.es) or Voila for French (www.voila.com)
*A picture, photograph, or graphic file Use Google and click on Images. The "Advanced Image Search" lets you limit your search by image size and file type. Another good search engine for images is DITTO (www.ditto.com).
*General Information on a broad topic or discipline Use a subject directory such as Infomine or the Librarians' Index to the Internet
*Research materials on a topic

When you are doing research, it is always better to use subject directories instead of search engines, in order to eliminate "bad" or irrelevant sites. (Infomine,Librarians' Index to the Internet, etc.)

You can also try Google Scholarwhich includes access to citations or full text of scholarly materials only.

 

*A specific piece of information Use a search engine such as Google.
*Information from a particular type of web sites such as government, commercial, or university sites

Use Google or Yahoo in Advanced Search mode and enter part of the URL in the "Domain" box.
Ex: .gov or .edu

*Current News If you just want to keep up with the news, use Yahoo or Google and click on News. Another good site for breaking news is:
1st Headlines News (1stheadlines.com) .

To see if your favorite newspaper or magazine is on the web, use Newslinks (newslink.org)

*Shopping on the web (anything from airline tickets to flowers...) Yahoo is a good starting point. .Just click on "Shop" and start browsing. In Google, just click on "Frooglel"
*To search blogs Use Feedster, Technorati or DayPop
*To search for materials you can use and adapt without violating copyright Do an advanced search in Yahoo and limit search to Creative Commons
*To search for musci files, podcasts, radio news Do a Yahoo audio search
*How many other web sites link to your own web page... Use Google in advanced search mode, and do a Link search (in the Page Specific Search section) by entering the URL of your web page in the box..
