Richard T. Coz, S.J. died of cancer on Dec. 31, 2010. He was 86 years old, a Jesuit for 63 years and an ordained priest for 52 years. Born in Fresno in 1924, he entered the Jesuit Novitiate at Los Gatos in 1947 and was ordained a priest in 1958.
After pursuing doctoral studies in economics, Fr. Coz joined Santa Clara in 1963. During his 32-year career here he served as professor of economics and director of the Studies Abroad program. He was a popular teacher who received the Business School Teacher of the Year award in 1990.  Dick remained in the lives of many of our alumni, officiating at hundreds of marriages and baptisms.  In 2007, alumni established a scholarship fund in his name. The success of the "Pause for Coz" scholarship is a true measure of the love and esteem in which he was held.
After retiring from Santa Clara in 1995, Fr. Coz taught at Brophy College Prep in Phoenix, and De La Salle High School in Concord. Following a stroke in 2007, he came to Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos where he remained until his death last week.
