Seven SCU student-athletes named to WCC All-Academic Team

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 12, 2003 Seven Santa Clara University student-athletes have been named to the 2003 West Coast Conference Fall All-Academic team, including five from men’s and women’s cross-country teams.

Benjamin Gauen and Pat Green from men's cross country, Robin Bell, Katie Hansen and Cara Payne from women's cross country, Megan Kakadelas of women's soccer and Will Weatherly from men's soccer were among the 64 athletes honored by the conference.

Gauen, a senior finance major with a 3.59 GPA, is a three-time honoree. Bell and Weatherly are two-time recipients.

At the completion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each of the participating sponsored sports. To be considered, a student-athlete must earn at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his or her team.

At the NCAA College Cup national championship men’s soccer tournament in Columbus, Ohio, it was announced that Bronco men's soccer defender Ryan Cochrane, a senior from Portland, Oregon, was named to the 2003 NSCAA/adidas Men's NCAA Division I All-America Second Team.

Cochrane had been unable to play with the Broncos at the tournament, because he was playing with the U.S. men’s Under-21 team in an international tournament.

On Dec.12, the Broncos lost to eventual winner Indiana in the soccer semifinals, in a 1-0 in a double-overtime thriller. Indiana beat St. John’s 2-1 on Dec. 14 for the title.
