WCC tourney returns to Toso Pavilion

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 26, 2000 --March Madness in the New Millenium gets an early start with the14th annual WCC Basketball Championships at Santa Clara University's Toso Pavilion beginning Thursday, March 2.

The Bronco men's and women's teams will enter the tournament after strong finishes at the season's end. The men's Broncos upset Gonzaga in Santa Clara on Feb. 25, avenging a 30-point defeat in January. The women's team beat Gonzaga a day earlier.

The men's and women's teams from all eight WCC universities descend on Toso Pavilion for five days and 14 games of action, beginning at noon March 2. The women's championship, to be televised on Fox Sports, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 5. The men's championship, to be televised on ESPN, will be at 9 p.m. Monday, March 6.

Final matchups were to be determined on Feb. 27.

Bronco fans will kick off the tournament with a "Trouble in the Bubble" pep rally at 6 p.m. on March 2 in the Kennedy Mall next to Swig Hall, with t-shirts, cheerleaders, the dance team, pep band, food and prizes.

The 2000 hoop battles mark the eighth time the men's NCAA automatic bid has been decided at SCU. The Broncos hosted the men's tournament in 1994-9, 1991 and 1988. The women's event, in its ninth year, is back at SCU for the eighth time, too.
