June News
As we round out the quarter and enter into week 10 - we can not believe how far we have come for this graduating class of seniors. In March of 2020, when they were 1st years we sent them home thinking we would be back in 2 - 3 weeks as we all know it was longer than that. The Malley Center and Campus Recreation program remained closed through March 2021. We moved Intramurals to virtual with limited participation and created a stay-at-home workout page on our website with ideas to do from home.
In March 2021 we finally opened the parking garage weight room on the 1st floor near Campus Safety. This space required masks, reservations and was limited to 15 students every 45 minutes. We were able to increase this capacity to 25 after the spring quarter began. Also during the spring quarter, we opened the pool like the parking garage weight room you needed a reservation for a lane and there were no lounge chairs. Both facilities were only open to students due to the limited numbers. And both closed in June 2021.
On September 1, 2021, we finally opened Malley for faculty, staff, and students after being closed for over 500 days. We opened with masks and changed capacities in all spaces. Club sports returned in the fall quarter but were limited to practices only since they had not been practicing since Spring 2020. In January 2022 we finally brought Intramural Sports back but only outside sports until May when we had a weekend 3 on 3 tournament on the Malley Center Courts. In addition, we were excited to transition Club Sports to competing in the Winter Quarter of '22.
Now in their final academic year, we feel more like normal - our check-in data is breaking records through March 31, we had over 162,000 check-ins with 5,707 of those being unique users. Intramural Sports had 3,912 participants and of those 111 were faculty/staff (in 18-19 we had 5 faculty/staff play). Many of our 17 Club Sports teams qualified for regionals, and in other national events, we saw as many as 550 student-athletes. See their email next week for all of their highlights from their seasons.
We wanted to take a moment to look back on the last four years that the class of 2023 was on campus - we hope you enjoyed the flashback we are very excited to be back to normal. In this email below we will talk about all the things happening this month for Campus Recreation - please read below for facility hours in the summer & commencement weekend, summer membership and locker information, and many other items.
Be well - Janice DeMonsi, Director of Recreation
| Thank you Campus Recreation Seniors!Thank you to our seniors! Campus Recreation has 23 graduating seniors and we wish them and the entire class of 2023 a HUGE congratulations! We have a number of student positions but wanted to highlight the six (6) Student Coordinators that will be graduating. The student coordinators help behind the scenes making everything come together. The four (4) full-time staff could not do our jobs without them.
- Antonio - was an IM staff as a first year and then moved up into the Intramural Student Coordinator role, He helped Austin bring back Intramural Sports in Winter 2022. He also worked in the parking garage weight room and as a Campus Recreation Monitor (mask enforcement in the facility) before IMs began.
- Dante - was hired to work as a Facility Supervisor (FS)in the Fall 2021. He interviewed for a Membership Services (MS) or Weight Room (WR) position but based on his previous jobs we asked him to be a supervisor. He had to learn all three roles in like two weeks. This academic year he was promoted to Facility Student Coordinator. Dante has helped keep the facility in order as we got back up and running full speed this year.
- Emma - worked at the Malley Center Front Desk as an MS and was promoted to Intramural Sports Coordinator for the 2022-2023 academic year. She played an important role in the implementation of new sports offerings such as Pickleball and the Faculty/Staff Leagues.
- Kensy - worked at the Front Desk of the Malley Center, and was quickly promoted to FS, and then Club Sports Student Coordinator - as a coordinator, she works with all 17 club sports managing their rosters, budgets, travel, etc.
- Rose - joined our team with the summer camp in Summer ‘22 when the camp came back for the 1st time in 2 years (canceled ‘20, and never happened ‘21) - she moved into the Marketing Student Coordinator position in August ‘22 to get us ready for fall ‘22 with an updated website, Instagram post, and the digital display in the lobby.
- Sam - helped us open the Malley Center on September 1, 2021 having worked as an IM supervisor in her first year - she had never worked in the Malley Center. She has been the Fitness Student Coordinator since September 2021. She trains all the Weight Room Attendants and schedules all the fitness classes. In November 2022, she helped bring back all the Independent Fitness Contractors that teach for us.
We can not thank these senior student coordinators enough for their service to our program this past year administering their program areas. We are also excited for the other 17 seniors we have on staff, and the whole Class of 2023! You did it! |
