Michigan Clean Slate Law Details

Michigan passed a Clean Slate law in 2020. Under this law, an unlimited number of misdemeanor convictions that could result in a potential jail sentence of 93 days or less, and up to 4 misdemeanors that could result in a jail sentence of more than 93 days, can be automatically “set aside,” or sealed, after 7 years. In addition, up to 2 felony convictions can be “set aside” after 10 years. Certain convictions are not eligible, including violent crimes, domestic violence, sex offenses, and DUIs.

In Michigan, setting aside a conviction record means that it will no longer show up on background checks for most jobs and occupational licenses, and you can answer most questions about your criminal record as if it never occurred. Non-conviction records are expunged, meaning they are deleted.
