TUESDAY TEACHING TIP: What's new with Advising this year?

Weekly teaching tips are designed to bolster your teaching toolbelt with local examples grounded in teaching and learning literature and relevant professional development opportunities.

Introduction

Faculty advising is an important part of creating student belonging at SCU. For faculty, advising supports teaching, and also offers a chance to build one-on-one relationships with students. Faculty advising includes many types of advising, from helping students discern major and career plans, choosing classes that support their goals, identifying co-curricular opportunities like research, clubs, internships, and mentoring.

 

Diana Morlang | Teaching Professor, Political Science & Faculty Advisor in the Drahmann Center What’s new for faculty advisors?  Mandatory Fall Advising for new students: New students will have advising holds on their accounts preventing Winter registration (November 11-16). Departments will remove the holds after students are advised. Departments will develop an advising protocol for removing holds which may involve faculty advising students. New ways to email your advisees in Workday: The SCU Workday team has developed an easy way to email your advising cohort. Here are the instructions for emailing your advisees through Workday.

Supurna Dasgupta | Assistant Professor, English Our student assistants visited Supurna Dasgupta to find out how she's worked to become a confident advisor. Supurna calls out Department Managers as great sources of historical knowledge, students as inspirational and engaged partners in the advising process, and she suggests connecting students with the many varied resources and supports available across SCU.
