International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples
Today is the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, which has been observed annually since 1994. Decided by the United Nations, this year’s theme is "Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-Determination." Recent data by the United Nations indicates that there are 370 to 500 million Indigenous people living in 90 countries around the world. Visit the UN website to learn more about the history of this holiday.
International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples provides an opportunity for the Santa Clara University community to reflect on our connection to local Indigenous Peoples. One of the ways that we do so is through our university land acknowledgement.
International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples also provides a moment to consider extending our commitment to the Ohlone and Muwekma Ohlone beyond acknowledgement and education. Various university-supported funds work to restore Native sovereignty in our region, and Global Engagement encourages all Santa Clara University community members to donate.
