SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY | Our Jesuit Mission in Action
Our last Mission Monday brought “Discernment and Reflection” to life. Community members responded to the question - How have you used discernment or reflection in your study, work or experience at Santa Clara University?
“I tell my students that at SCU you have two choices...either you should be reflecting or you should be discerning. I ask them to practice the 4 D's of discernment (i.e., Discovery of their gifts, Detachment from the voices that surround them, Discernment (reflecting on what gives them consolation vs desolation), and Direction for next steps.”
- Tom Plante, Professor, Psychology

JESUIT VALUES & MISSION | Solidarity & Kinship
A Jesuit education is grounded in solidarity and kinship. At Santa Clara University, faculty, staff, and students work together for the greater good. We develop relationships of mutuality with our surrounding communities and share talents and skills to co-create innovative solutions to local and global challenges.
JESUIT VALUES | In 50 Words or Less
“Jesus was not a person for others. He was one with others. …Jesus' strategy was not centered in taking the right stand on issues, but rather in standing in the right place—with the outcast, the leper and the prisoner- and those relegated to the margins.”
- Paraphrased from Gregory Boyle, Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion. We are honored that Greg Boyle, SJ, STM ‘86 will be the SCU Class of 2023 Commencement Speaker.
