“As the world around us surges into a frenzied and festive December, let's take a step away from the party and ask the Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts for a deeper and truer celebration of Christmas — one that is not undermined by lamentation, but that is made more potent because of it."
― Kerry van der Vinne, Advent: Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room

Sunday Advent Reflections 2023
Advent, Renewal, Restoration
We begin Advent this year in a world rife with challenges, needs, and grace-filled opportunities. The world cries out for compassion, peace, and response to suffering. While we experience our world as much more interconnected than in previous times, we are also faced with deep fissures and seeming irreconcilable differences that threaten to upend our relationships with one another and our world. On the personal and communal levels, as well on the national and international ones, the challenge of Jesus' compassion and inclusive ministry call us to respond. How do we make God's love revealed to us in Jesus a reality in response to these deep differences?
This Advent, we are invited to ponder the Sunday Advent readings and open ourselves to the transformative power of the Spirit that speaks to us of the ways to be love and mercy in this changed world.
If you would like to receive a weekly reflection on the Sunday readings for this Advent Season please register with your email address below and they will be sent to you on the Saturday night before.

CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) Short-Term Therapy CAPS continues to offer short-term therapy. The basic steps to getting started in CAPS are outlined below, and the CAPS website has more detailed information on short-term therapy services:
- First Step: Phone consultation. Students can call 408-554-4501 to schedule a phone consultation, which takes 15-25 minutes. During this call, CAPS staff assess if the therapeutic support a student is seeking fits within the short-term therapy model at CAPS. Collaboratively, the therapist and student will determine next steps.
- If short-term therapy is recommended, a CAPS therapist will then reach out to the student to schedule a 50 minute intake appointment via the SCU Health Portal.
- If referral to an off-campus therapist or services is recommended, an appointment with the Cowell Center Clinical Case Manager will be offered to support the referral process.
*Reminder: There are no limits on the number of therapy sessions and no fees at CAPS, but services are designed to be short-term.
