"If you have come here tonight on Rosh Hashanah and feel that there is nothing to examine, no wound in your life to heal, no relationship to repair—then I hope you will listen especially closely to the shofar. Rosh Hashanah is also known as Yom Teruah—the Day for the Sounding of the Shofar. The purpose of the Shofar blast is to shake us up, and to disturb our status quo.
For the shofar blast should be a wake up call that reminds us to dig a little deeper, to bear into what is hard, to stop living life on the surface of it all. To return to our fractured relationships. To lean into the grief that you’re feeling for someone you lost. To examine the imperfections that we constantly criticize and then, to get curious.
God has given us a sacred task and opportunity: to make our own tikkun. But in the coming year, instead of trying to make our broken parts whole, may you find in them—what is most holy."

2024 FASPE Seminary Fellowship
Application Due: Jan. 2, 2024 | Application Link Here
Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE) provides a unique historical lens to study contemporary ethics in the professions. FASPE offers fellowships to students pursuing professional degrees in business, journalism, law, medicine, seminary, and design & technology, as well as to early-career professionals in these fields. Fellows in each of FASPE’s six programs spend two intensive weeks in Germany and Poland, visiting Auschwitz and key historical sites in Berlin and Krakow, and participating in rigorous seminars led by experts in their respective fields. Fellows begin their studies by examining the roles their professional counterparts played in Germany and elsewhere from 1933-1945, and then draw on historical, cultural, philosophical, literary and discipline-specific sources to explore the ethical issues facing their fields today.

Water is Sacred
September 8 - October 8 | ACCI Gallery | 1652 Shattuck Ave.
“Water is Sacred” is a juried photography exhibition that explores the power of water in its various forms and how that power is manifested in our diverse environments. Photographer Susanna (Suzun) Lucia Lamaina will be our guest juror/curator. From rain to rivers to floods, moisture to lakes and oceans, water is a powerful force affecting the planet. It nurtures our gardens and devastates our lives when there’s a drought. It’s the basis of all life. We invite photographers to submit photographs that examine the myriad impacts of water. From the presence of water to its absence. Consider a broad spectrum of subject matter, such as extreme weather and climate changes, access to clean drinking water and everyday activities like bathing and doing laundry. This exhibition will explore the dynamics of water as sacred and its impact on our lives.

“Touching Ground, Putting Down Roots: Chinese in Berkeley,” Exhibition
September 8 - September 30 | Berkeley Historical Society & Museum | 1931 Center St.
The exhibit will tell the stories of prominent Berkeley residents of Chinese descent, including activists, artists, accomplished professionals, distinguished scholars and professors and even Madame Chiang Kai-shek. There will also be stories of regular family life and of workers and bosses in Chinese-owned laundries, restaurants, and other enterprises. Finally, the exhibit will document the remarkable increase in the numbers of Chinese and Chinese American students at Cal and the equally dramatic growth of Berkeley’s Chinese American population in the last three decades. For more than 150 years, people of Chinese descent have put down roots that have grown deep and spread in Berkeley’s rich social environment.
The exhibit was developed by a team chaired by Jeanine Castello-Lin. Introduction by Charles Wollenberg.
