Dear Faculty,
In this week leading up to the Super Bowl on Feb 8, we recognize that many students, along with faculty and staff, are concerned about the possibility of increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in the area, and what that might mean for our SCU community. While we continue to value the in-person learning experience central to our educational approach, the possibility of heightened enforcement presence is creating fear that directly impacts students’ ability to attend class and participate fully in campus life, especially those commuting to campus.
Students may not always feel comfortable articulating these concerns, and we know you care deeply about their well-being. In addition to the increased campus security measures for Feb 4-9 shared with the community earlier today, we are reaching out to provide approaches to help you to create a supportive environment in your classroom during this period. For additional guidance, please see the Faculty Development resources on supporting students.
- Communicate care and provide options for connection. Let students know early in the week that you're aware of potential challenges. Consider offering virtual office hours via Zoom alongside your in-person hours. We have guides with suggestions for conducting effective office hours in person and via Zoom.
- Build in flexibility where possible. When appropriate, record class sessions and consider flexible attendance policies between Feb 4-9. Many flexible policies are already established; this may be a helpful moment to highlight those options for students. These accommodations support students through temporary disruptions while maintaining our commitment to in-person learning (which should still account for at least 70% of course contact hours).
- Connect students to community conversations and other forms of support. We encourage you and your students to participate in campus conversations and, as needed, help students to connect with the counseling and crisis services listed below.
As we move forward in solidarity, we encourage you to find ways to empower yourself, find community, and maintain your own wellbeing. We are grateful for your efforts to connect, listen, support, and care for each other.
With gratitude,
James M. Glaser
