Dr. Francis is currently an Emergency Medicine resident at the University of Connecticut's program at Hartford Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center serving a diverse patient population of over 1 million. Dr. Francis completed medical school at the University of Vermont in 2011. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Dr. Francis studied electrical engineering at Santa Clara University (BSEE 2003); he focused his research in the area of control systems at the Robotic Systems Laboratory. During his senior year, Dr. Francis co-founded Idean Robotics, a start-up in the heart of California's Silicon Valley where he designed control and data acquisition solutions for robotic systems ranging from biotech bench research equipment to underwater ROVs. Dr. Francis also volunteered for emergency services organizations and became an EMT. He completed a Master's Degree with distinction in Engineering Management and Leadership with a focus in biomedical engineering at Santa Clara University (MSEM 2006). During this time he also served on the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s E-Council and taught review sessions in organic chemistry. He began medical school in 2007. According to Francis, "I believe medicine and engineering are closely intertwined, thus I am constantly looking for opportunities to utilize technology to improve patient care." Dr. Francis plans to practice clinical medicine and will continue to utilize his dual background in engineering and medicine for medical research and improving patient care.
