At Santa Clara faculty and students work together to explore history by focusing on the world's regions - Africa, Latin America, East Asia, South Asia and the Indian Ocean, Africa, West Asia and the Middle East, Europe, and the United States - in order to better understand the human condition, both in the past and in the present. Whether you are interested in the history of revolutions and social change, political, religious, and cultural institutions, diplomacy and warfare, migration and integration, sex and gender, religious, racial, and ethnic diversity, the history of ideas, global history, the environment, food, and sustainability, health, illness and medicine, criminality and deviance, consumption and trade, imperialism and colonial settlement, slavery, freedom and human rights, genocide and structural violence, history has something to offer the inquiring student.

Department News

Amy Randall is one of four winners of the Phi Beta Kappa Northern California Association Excellence in Teaching Award for 2012.

These awards are conferred to honor those who have been outstanding teachers and mentors in the opinion of members of PBK NCA. They are those who have taught an especially memorable course, or who have had a special impact on the education, career, life, or who have been found inspiring or particularly admirable by a PBK member.

Each awardee receives a handsome certificate, invitation to the Annual Awards Dinner, and a modest honorarium ($500 in recent years).
