World Music Festival 2008Festival de Música CubanaSanta Clara University Department of Music is proud to host the 2008 World Music Festival - this year featuring the multi tiered music of Cuba. Music representing Cuba's cafes, streets, salons, mountains and recital halls will be performed by stellar musicians including Bobi Cespedes, Zaira Meneses, La Orquesta Moderna Tradicion, Anthony Blea and Santa Clara University faculty and students. Festival de Música Cubana, the first of a series of World Music Festivals being held by Santa Clara University’s Department of Music, will take place Feb. 6 through 13, 2008 on the Santa Clara University campus. With artistic direction by SCU music professor Robert Bozina, this exhilarating festival celebrates Cuba’s rich culture. Events range from concerts with Rumba, Son Casino, and Bolero to a Sunday mass in the Mission Church with music by 18th century Cuban priest Esteban Salas, and include an array of music, lectures, workshops, dance, film, photo exhibitions, KSCU Radio broadcasts, and food.
In addition to a series of free events, Festival de Música Cubana features an evening concert on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 at 8 p.m. entitled “Cuba: A Sonic Landscape” in the Santa Clara University Recital Hall, performed by SCU’s Department of Music faculty, Son Santa Clara, and Concert Choir. Boasting guest artists the San Francisco Guitar Quartet and Puerto Rican pianist Dr. Alma Batista, this lively concert will celebrate music from the villages, concert halls, cafes, and casinos from Havana to Baracoa. A special Danzón presentation will also take place Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008 at 8 p.m. at the de Saisset Museum (Santa Clara University campus) featuring the music of Orquesta La Moderna Tradición. Guests of this semi-formal event, “Una Noche de Danzón,” will have the opportunity to listen to this Afro Cuban/European-generated form, and learn to dance the uniquely elegant style that permeates all of Cuban society. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 / Recital Hall, 12 pm Free admission, no tickets required Cuba’s Centro Nacional de Escuelas de Arte Professor Rogelio (Noño) Kindelan and other guest artists lead SCU percussion students in a workshop involving the complex technique and rhythms of Cuba’s music. Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 / Adobe Lodge, 12 pm Adobe lunch pricing Enjoy authentic Cuban cuisine accompanied by the soulful sounds of Cuban Charanga. Ranging from Latin jazz to Danzón, this is precisely the style of music one hears throughout Cuba’s public gathering places. Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 / Recital Hall, 8 pm Tickets: $5-12 Celebrate the music of Cuban villages, concert halls, cafes, and casinos with this lively concert performed by Department of Music faculty, Son Santa Clara, and the SCU Concert Choir. Featuring special guests the San Francisco Guitar Quartet and profound Puerto Rican pianist, Dr. Alma Batista, Cuban works range from Son Cubano by Son Santa Clara to the U.S. premier of Cuban concert repertory of Alejandro García Caturla, performed by Dr. Batista. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008 / Mission Santa Clara, 10 am This traditional Sunday mass hosts works of Cuban composer Esteban Salas (1725 - 1803) performed by the SCU music faculty and Concert Choir. Ordained a priest at the age of 65, Salas intended his music for the churches and cathedrals of Cuba. Monday, Feb. 11, 2008 / Recital Hall, 1pm Free admission, no tickets required Attorney Bill Martinez, a leading expert in U.S.-Cuban cultural exchange; co-founder of Latino Entertainment Partners; and producer of the nationally broadcast “Music Bridges,” discusses the past, present and future of cultural exchanges with Cuba. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008 / Recital Hall, 12pm Free admission, no tickets required Field-research film by SCU Professor Robert Bozina depicts music and dance from Havana to Baracoa including Rumba Gua Guanco, Changüí, Quiriba, Danzón, Conga, Comparsa, Tumba Francesa and more, all shown through the rough hewn, original footage. Segments of this film have supported lectures in academic institutions both nationally and internationally. Accompanied by an exhibition of photos by SCU Professor David Pace.
