Hello Parents, Family Members, and Supporters of our SCU Students!
Congratulations to your students on completing Winter Quarter 2024. I wish them a fantastic spring break and hope they can take some time to relax amidst their planned activities. If they're heading home, it’s important to know that they might be feeling tired after the quarter and may want to catch up on sleep. That's completely normal and part of the college journey. Once they're up, they'll be eager to see you and ready for a delicious home-cooked meal!
As a reminder, this newsletter is designed to provide you with insight into life at SCU and equip you with valuable information to guide your students throughout their college journey. The content presented in this newsletter has been previously communicated to your student through email, at a resource fair, or is available on the SCU website. In this edition, you will:
- Discover support resources available to students wherever they are
- Get details about the upcoming career fair
- Learn about a new family communication channel
- Understand how to help your student navigate registration holds
- Explore the important role students play in university operations
In the past few weeks, I've teamed up with a vendor to introduce a new way of communicating with our parents and families at SCU and I am excited to introduce The Bronco Family Network, a cloud-based platform crafted to centralize our information sharing and deliver tailored content aligned with your interests. More about this new offering is detailed below.
Should you have any feedback on the content of this newsletter or specific requests for future editions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me via email at sponce@scu.edu.
Cheers!

Support from Anywhere: Campus Resources in Your Pocket
The Cowell Center, your student's primary healthcare provider, goes beyond offering in-person medical and psychological services. They've established partnerships with medical providers to provide resources nationwide. With CAPS 24/7, a supplementary service for SCU students, the Cowell Center provides free, flexible options and tools to support your student's mental and emotional well-being. This service includes teletherapy, crisis support, referral assistance, and more. Students can start service by calling (408) 554-5220 at any hour of the day or night.
Students can also access resources for enhancing resilience and coping with everyday mental health challenges through the Scout by Sutter Health mobile app. Scout provides interactive tools, tips, and resources in a guided resilience journey, aiding in navigating life's obstacles and gaining early insight into challenging emotions and mental health stressors. Signing up is free for students using the code SCUSCOUT during registration.
Save the Date: Spring Career Fair 2024
|
Remind your students to attend the 2024 Spring Career Fair, taking place on Wednesday, April 10th from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at the Athletics Excellence Center (AEC) on campus. During the fair, they can:
- Find part-time, full-time, internship, and volunteer opportunities
- Network with employers
- Learn about career opportunities that organizations have to offer
Students should register on Handshake and are encouraged to check out the list of participating employers and their available positions ahead of the fair. To effectively prepare for networking with recruiters, it's recommended that students review this list in advance and explore the Job Prep Toolkit.

The Bronco Family Network: A New Communication Hub
I am excited to introduce The Bronco Family Network, a new Family Hub, designed to enhance communication from Santa Clara University. This platform allows you to personalize the information you receive from SCU based on your interests, your student's year, their major's college, and other self-selected criteria. It enables us to share information more frequently without overwhelming your inbox.
But what if you enjoy receiving emails? Not to worry! The system includes a feature that automatically sends you a newsletter with the top 5 posts relevant to you, at the frequency you prefer (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc.). This means everyone receives tailored content while all information remains accessible within the platform. For example, parents of Juniors and Seniors living off-campus will no longer receive notifications about the Room Selection process unless they choose to opt in. Interested in NCAA Athletics or the Arts? Now you can receive regular updates on those topics as well.
One of the best features of this portal is its centralized nature. It consolidates all the information we share and includes a search function to help you locate past posts containing the information you need. Additionally, it provides an Opt-In text messaging feature for important notifications and allows direct texting for questions, comments, or feedback.
In a few weeks, you'll receive a welcome email with instructions on completing the registration process. It's straightforward, and once completed, grants you access to the hub. If you choose not to register, you'll still receive bi-weekly newsletters, with an option to opt out anytime.
The Bronco Family Newsletter will continue to be sent until the end of the Spring Quarter, albeit with overlapping information from the new family hub. Our goal with The Bronco Family Network is to simplify things for you and make information quickly accessible. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback.
Unlocking Success: Navigating Registration Holds
Registration holds can be frustrating as they prevent students from adding classes in future quarters. These holds are only removed once the requirements set by the department are satisfied. One type of hold, placed on February 27th, is for vaccine non-compliance. If this hold appears on your student's account, it indicates that they have not met one or more of the required vaccines or screenings at SCU. Impacted students should email cowellcenter@scu.edu for more information about this hold.
To check for holds on their accounts, students can log into Workday, go to the Academics section, and select View My Holds. If a hold is present, instructions on how to proceed will be provided.
Key to SCU Success: The Vital Role of Student Employees
Student employees play a vital role in Santa Clara University's operations, contributing to the diverse range of programs and services offered across academic departments and administrative offices. SCU employs over 3,000 students on campus, in roles such as student assistants, community facilitators, research assistants, intramural supervisors, teaching assistants, immersion coordinators, orientation leaders, and more. They are our frontline team, engaging with guests and supporting everything we do, and we're incredibly grateful for them.
Beyond financial support, working on campus offers students invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth. Through hands-on experience, they develop practical skills, time management abilities, and self-confidence. They also gain insights into various career paths, understand the inner workings of the University, and explore potential career opportunities in higher education.
Students can search for employment opportunities by logging into Workday, navigating to the Career Page, and clicking the SCU Student On-Campus Jobs tab.
Many events are taking place at SCU for students to enjoy! From engaging talks to entertaining performances, and everything in between, there's something for everyone. Explore some of the events, including those I mention below, on the SCU Events Page!
