Associate Provost Global Engagement Update
Welcome to the November edition of the Associate Provost Global Engagement Update.
At this time in the fall term I am reflective of the work that we do that cultivates global understanding and the ways in which this understanding promotes peace. Contemporary international higher education has its roots in “citizen diplomacy” – the idea that if people from different countries and cultures build relationships with one another on a personal and individual level, that these relationships will promote peace among nations.
There are about 275 students studying abroad this year and about 1,600 international students at SCU. In addition, our faculty are engaged in research with colleagues around the globe and we are hosting visiting researchers and scholars. Next week is International Education Week, a joint venture from the U.S. Departments of Education and State to celebrate international education at universities across the country. I hope you will join us for our annual State of Global Engagement lunch and presentation, our global concert with performers from our student and staff community, and other events throughout the week.
No time for an event? Share your global profile story, or contribute your favorite global song or recipe to our virtual lists. I look forward to a celebration of our global community with you all.
Please be sure to scroll to the bottom for events and deadlines to add to your calendar now. Thank you for all that you do to make SCU global.
Best,
Susan Popko

🌟Global Explorations Faculty-Led Programs Abroad
Missed the Global Explorations information sessions last month? Learn more on our website.
Global Explorations programs abroad offer faculty an opportunity to propose leading a program abroad. Global Explorations programs are a key component in SCU’s overall global programs portfolio that promote access to study abroad. Teaching on a Global Explorations program provides faculty with an opportunity to gain experience teaching abroad, and help students build stronger global competencies. Have questions? New Wellness Checks While Studying Abroad
Living in a new culture can be exhilarating and rewarding, but part of engaging with new cultures abroad includes experiencing frustration and grappling with cultural transitions. All travelers experience some form of cultural transition.
To support students abroad through this process of cultural transition, we have implemented new Wellness Checks and amplified resources to help students check in on their wellbeing. Learn more about Cultural Adjustment and wellness while abroad.
