A Message from the President - May 2014

50th Anniversary of Women’s Athletics

This year we reached the gold – in women’s athletics, that is. Fifty years ago, just a few years after women were admitted into the undergraduate program, women’s athletics had its start at Santa Clara. And to celebrate, we will honor soccer star and girls’ advocate Brandi Chastain ’91 as our undergraduate commencement speaker in June. Brandi epitomizes the world-class leadership and fortitude that every Bronco is capable of achieving. She is a dedicated and disciplined athlete who is also committed to strengthening communities by advocating for and empowering young girls.

We proudly commemorate the many Bronco women who built the program from three intercollegiate teams of the Women’s Recreation Association in 1964 to ten teams competing in NCAA Division I athletics today, plus many more club teams. Among the ranks of Santa Clara women athletes are All-Americans, NCAA champions, Olympians, a Rhodes Scholar, and the first woman athletic director in the WCC. The growth and reputation of women’s athletics at Santa Clara is a testament to the generations of women who forged the path. To all of our women athletes, past and present, thank you for your commitment and Bronco spirit in the field of sport.
