Advising - A Shared Responsibility

Students are personally responsible for knowing all the academic regulations affecting their program of study and for completing all degree requirements as set forth by the University, their College or School, and academic department(s). Failure to understand these regulations and requirements does not relieve a student of responsibility.

Incoming first-year students in the Leavey School of Business receive an advising portfolio containing advising and program information.  All official correspondence, notes about meetings, forms, Requirements Checklists, Course Planning worksheets, etc. should be kept in this portfolio..

Academic Advisor

Each incoming student is assigned to a specific faculty member in the student’s school or college who serves as the student’s academic advisor. Faculty advisors are your primary resource for information and assistance on curricular planning and program choice.  You can expect the faculty advisor to:

  • Encourage and guide students as they develop realistic goals
  • Encourage students as they develop attainable educational plans
  • Assist students in gaining decision making skills and skills in assuming responsibility for their educational plans and achievements
  • Assist students in understanding the purposes and goals of higher education and its effects on their lives and personal goals
  • Assist students in understanding the purposes and goals of higher education and its effects on their lives and personal goals
  • Understand and effectively communicate the curriculum, particularly in regard to the declared major, and graduation requirements
  • Provide students with information about and strategies for using the available resources and services on campus
  • Maintain confidentiality

Peer Advising
 
Leavey School of Business Peer Advisors are the resource for information and assistance on curricular planning for the university and business core requirements, academic policies and regulations, and how to use SCU advising resources and materials, particularly in the first year.  While maintaining strict confidentiality, you can expect Peer Advisors to provide guidance on many topics, including:

  • Campus life at Santa Clara University
  • How to navigate ECampus
  • First year course selection and scheduling
  • Locating appropriate information in the University Bulletin and Web site
  • Resources and tools for course planning
  • Referral to faculty with relevant academic and/or career information
  • Referral to campus resources available to support academic, personal and career development

Peer Advisors are available on a scheduled drop-in basis in Lucas 115.You can reach a Peer Advisor via email at LSB-PeerAdvisor@scu.edu.

Required Advising

All students who have not yet petitioned to graduate must meet with their academic advisor during the published advising period in May of each year.  First-year students meet with their assigned Peer Advisor.  All other students meet with their assigned Faculty Advisor.
Students who do not comply with this requirement will not be permitted to register for the next term.  Procedures for setting meetings with advisors may vary.  Students should check with their assigned advisor for more complete information.
