About the Course

BUSN 188: (Field Studies: LSB Neighborhood Prosperity Initiative) is a 4-unit course offered over two quarters (Winter and Spring -- 2 units per quarter) each year to give students a unique perspective of entrepreneurship by working directly with a business owner from a local underserved community. Students learn about the challenges and opportunities of business ownership in these communities, along with goal setting, planning, and execution. They utilize a wide variety of skills and academic knowledge throughout the course, working in teams of 3-5 students. The course satisfies the core requirement for Experiential Learning for Social Justice (ELSJ).

Students will meet with their business owners over the two quarters, including within the business owner's community and/or place of business, to fulfill the requirement of hours within the community, and will also prepare reflections, presentations, and other activities to fulfill the academic requirements of the course.
