What are your top two career prep recommendations?

1) Seek, Establish, and Document Your Professional Network

The adage "It's not what you know, but who you know" continues to be something that holds true in the professional world. Thus, building a robust network is crucial, often more so than your immediate skills or knowledge. Start by proactively reaching out to potential contacts through platforms like LinkedIn or via email. Engage them by inquiring about their roles and expressing genuine interest in their career paths. This not only helps in gaining insights but also lays the foundation for lasting professional relationships.

Another crucial step is maintaining a detailed record of these networking calls and interactions in order to significantly enhance the utility of your network. Create an organized spreadsheet to track who you’ve spoken with, jot down specific questions, and summarize the key points from each conversation. This practice will help you in future communications, allowing you to refer back to memorable details and discussions, keeping the connections both meaningful and active.

2) Take Time to Think About Your Priorities

Choosing a job isn’t merely about aiming for the biggest company name or the most lucrative offer. It's essential to consider several facets that contribute to long-term job satisfaction and growth. Reflect on the following:

  • People and Mentorship: Are the potential colleagues people you can see yourself working and growing with? Is there a mentorship culture that could help propel your career?
  • Nature of Work: Does the work challenge and invigorate you? Are the skills you’re developing transferable to other roles, or is there a risk of being pigeonholed?
  • Company Culture: Does the company culture align with your personal values and work style? Is the environment one where you can envision yourself thriving both personally and professionally?

Assessing these elements can guide you in selecting a position that not only meets your career ambitions but also supports your overall well-being and professional growth.

Why do you enjoy being a PCC?

Being a Peer Career Consultant (PCC) has been really rewarding, largely because it allows me to contribute to a community that played a pivotal role in my own professional development. This position offers a unique platform to give advice, share experiences, and facilitate students' transition into the workforce. Interacting with bright, driven students and discussing their aspirations and career plans is incredibly fulfilling.

Moreover, this role has deepened my existing relationships and helped forge new ones with my peers, expanding my personal and professional network within the business school. Additionally, engaging with faculty and executives during the program provides invaluable insights into diverse career trajectories and decision-making processes, which are instrumental as I approach the commencement of my own career.
