Faculty Recital Series – Celebrating Living Composers - James Cohn

We celebrate James Cohn's 80th birthday with a program of all West Coast premiers. This concert showcases his chamber music: flute and bassoon sonatas, woodwind quintet, and the Concerto da Camera. Featured faculty musicians are Claudia Bloom (Violin), Mimi Carlson (Flute), Patricia Mitchell (Oboe), Scott Hartman (French Horn) & Peter Gelfand (Cello), with special guest artists Madeline Bloom (Piano), Mark Brandenburg (Clarinet), and Carolyn Lockhart (Bassoon).
Opera-Cabaret – Till the Black Lady Sings Deborah Cheetham, soprano

Indigenous Australian Opera Singer, Deborah Cheetham comes to SCU to tell her story of overcoming racial stereotyping to become one of Australia’s artists whose mission is to bring opera to the people. Music by Puccini, Bernstein, Bolcom, Vaughan Williams, Rogers & Hammerstein, Canteloube, Lerner & Loewe.
(Deborah will also perform at the Music at Noon Series in “Introducing Deborah Cheetham” on Wednesday, April 23rd in the Recital Hall of the Music and Dance Facility.)

Featured composers highlighted in film and music are Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Isabella Leonarda, Anna Bon, Amy Beach, Peggy Glanville-Hicks, and SCU’s composer on faculty, Pamela Layman Quist.

Join the SCU Guitar Ensemble under the direction of David Duenas in a concert featuring fresh new works by Darin Au, Andrew York, and Takahashi Ogawa, interspersed with smart new arrangements and transcriptions of classical and world music.

The spring orchestra concert features a variety of works by Haydn, Mussorgsky, Sibelius, deFalla, and Saint-Saens, plus the California premiere of Matt Doran's "Memory of Marianne". Elisse LaBarre and Taylor Thorn return as guest conductors, while conductor Elena Zavala makes her debut appearance.
