Nam Ling Named Outstanding Overseas Scholar

Professor Nam Ling

Nam Ling, chair and professor of computer engineering, has been named "Outstanding Overseas Scholar" by Shanghai University of Electric Power (SUEP). The IEEE Fellow was appointed due to his research impact, publications (more than 170 publications in top-tier journals, books, and conferences), and because of the contributions he and his team of researchers from Santa Clara University and Huawei/Hisilicon are making in the field of 3D video coding—part of which is being adopted as the normative, or required, parts in the main-stream industry standard.

At a ceremony held on January 27, 2014, SUEP's President Li Xinghe remarked that under Ling's guidance, it is hoped their institution will strengthen its "exchanges and cooperation with foreign universities, and achieve breakthrough accomplishments in the directions of research training, team building, projects funding, cultivation of high-level scientific research results, and development of young faculty and graduate students." In his new role, Ling will help lead the research of a group of Shanghai's young professors, most are from its College of Electronics and Information Engineering and many have PhDs from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. According to Ling, this collaboration will pay dividends for both SCU and SUEP as it will "strengthen their research group, moving them to the next level, while also extending our research into the video analysis area and strengthening our Santa Clara 3D video coding research group." This spring, one of SUEP's professors will join Santa Clara's Department of Computer Engineering as a visiting researcher.

The appointment comes with a research grant which financially supports all joint research and related travels. Read more about Ling's work in 3D coding here.
