The 2023-24 Ethics Bowl squads from Santa Clara University turned in some truly excellent performances on December 2nd at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl California Regional competition.

Teams competed by addressing cases on a range of ethical scenarios which included drag shows and Down Syndrome, Environmental and Social Governance, banning books in high school courses, the ethics of true crime programming, and more.  One team finished with two wins, one loss and the other with one win and two losses.

Team Coach, Erin Bradfield, senior lecturer, philosophy, and Susan Kennedy, assistant professor, philosophy, both with the SCU College of Arts and Sciences, accompanied the team to the competition. Bradfield says, "I am extremely proud of both teams — they performed at a high level and competed against some of the teams that ultimately advanced to the semifinals."

The students worked extremely hard in the weeks leading up to the regional event, competing in practice rounds and a scrimmage versus San Jose State University, with judging assistance from Ethics Center's Brian Green, director of technology ethics and Irina Raicu, director, internet ethics, along with many other SCU faculty and staff. These practice rounds help simulate competition conditions and is invaluable training for the teams.

2023-24 Ethics Bowlers include Suzan Amiri, Dylan Cahill. Noah Cross, Daniel Hipon, Davis Robertson, Edward Sorensen, Kendall Schrohe, Kailai Shen, and Caroline Smith.

The Ethics Center is a proud supporter of the Ethics Bowl team, one of our many programs for students who are interested in not only studying ethics but also the application of ethical decision making into their daily lives.
