Dean Brackley, S.J. - Rest in Peace

Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011
Dear Staff and Faculty,
We received the news that Dean Brackley, S.J., faculty member at University of Central America (UCA) with close ties to Santa Clara University, died in El Salvador on Sunday, October 16, after a struggle with cancer. We join with Dean's family and the UCA community in mourning his death.  We celebrate the life he lived, always working for the Kingdom of God and dedicated to the Society of Jesus, the UCA, and the people of El Salvador. He will be profoundly missed.
Dean joined the theology faculty at UCA after the 1989 murder of six Jesuits, their housekeeper and her daughter by Salvadoran military troops. His ties to Santa Clara University run deep - as brother to the Jesuit community, as inspiration for the Casa de la Solidaridad program in San Salvador, as professor and mentor to the many SCU students studying at Casa, and as host and lecturer to SCU faculty and staff on immersion trips. Dean's was a prophetic voice challenging communities to live the Gospel message through simplified living, "downward mobility," and advocacy and action on behalf of the poor and marginalized people of the world. The many delegations of students, church leaders and journalists whom he hosted in El Salvador saw the world through new perspectives that transformed their world views.

To remember Dean and celebrate his life, the University community is invited to join in prayer at the noon Mass on Wednesday, October 19 in the Mission Church. As a community of faith, we pray for his peace in the Lord and ask God for the comfort and consolation of his family.

To honor Dean, donations are being accepted to assist students in the becarios program at Casa de la Solidaridad. Dean was instrumental in creating this special program in which Salvadoran students, known as Romero Scholars, work alongside students from the United States studying at the Casa. Donations can be made payable to Santa Clara University and sent to:
