Trustees Retreat on Jesuit Mission and Identity

On October 14-15, the Board of Trustees held their fall business meeting and participated in a facilitated retreat on Jesuit mission and identity. The retreat, which had the theme “The Role of Trustees in Maintaining and Promoting the Catholic Identity and Jesuit Mission of Santa Clara University,” was the first trustee retreat in nearly 10 years.  In preparation, the trustees read a series of articles on Jesuit education and mission, including “Communal Reflection on the Jesuit Mission in Higher Education: A Way of Proceeding,” from the Jesuit Conference in 2002. Sessions on Jesuit education and the essential elements of Jesuit mission and identity set the stage for discussion of the University’s Strategic Plan in the context of our Jesuit, Catholic heritage.  The conversations generated helpful comments and suggestions on the plan.  Once the trustee comments have been addressed, the plan will be distributed to the University community before it is approved at the Board of Trustees meeting in February.
