| Diversity, Multicultural Learning, and Inclusive Excellence Initiatives at Santa Clara University
In line with its Jesuit philosophy, Santa Clara University has a long-standing commitment to upholding the values of diversity and inclusive excellence. In recognition of that commitment, in 1999 the James Irvine Foundation provided Santa Clara with the Building Partnerships for Diversity grant, which helped to fund the Center for Multicultural Learning. When support from the Irvine Foundation ended in 2007, Provost Lucia Gilbert assumed the senior-level administrative responsibility for advancing diversity and promoting multicultural learning and inclusive excellence on campus. In doing so, she reinforced Santa Clara's commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence by providing leadership to promote those ideals, which are part of the University's explicit mission. To assist her, Provost Gilbert formed the Provost's Council for Diversity, Multicultural Learning, and Inclusive Excellence, which she chairs, and the Office for Multicultural Learning. Members of the Council serve two- or three-year renewable terms and devote approximately 20 percent of their time to the Council. The Council collectively provides leadership for advancing the importance of diversity, multicultural learning, and inclusive excellence.
