California's water resources are based primarily in Northern California, which receives the most rainfall and runoff from mountains. This means that around 75 percent of California’s water supply comes from north of Sacramento. However, 75 percent of the water demand is south of Sacramento, as the majority of our state's population lives south of our state capitol and most irrigated farmland is in Central California. Moving water from north to south within California requires a lot of energy–an estimated 15-20 percent of California’s energy use is spent on moving and cleaning water across the state to potable standards.
