Food and Agribusiness Institute brings "Hunger Games" to SCU
Amid all the buzz surrounding The Hunger Games franchise, the Food and Agribusiness Institute (FAI) brought its own version of the Hunger Games to Santa Clara University last spring. On May 30, FAI led a 12-hour fast from 5:30 am to 5:30 pm in the hopes of inspiring Santa Clara students, faculty, and staff to think more critically and engage in discussions about the issues of hunger and malnutrition.
The end of the fast was followed by a banquet in the Mission Gardens where the participants were given the opportunity to share a meal together and discuss their experiences from that day as well as resources for future action. Seventy-five people participated in the fast, and each received a t-shirt to commemorate the event.
After the success of this year’s Hunger Games, FAI is hoping to expand the event into a week-long series that would include a variety of speakers dedicated to local, national, and global hunger issues, as well as a service day at the Forge before the second annual 12-hour fast. The service day at the Forge would include harvesting and donating fresh vegetables to Loaves and Fishes, a food kitchen in San Jose.
FAI, along with Second Harvest Food Bank, is currently preparing to host the 5th annual Hunger Issues Forum on September 28. The Hunger Issues Forum is a one-day event for current (and aspiring) Hunger-Free Community Organizers. It will address food access, healthy eating, and highlight trends suhch as hunger among families, children, and seniors.
The forum was traditionally a summer event, but FAI moved the event to the academic year to encourage more SCU students to get involved. The forum will be part of the lead-up to the second annual Hunger Games that will, again, take place in the spring.
The Food and Agribusiness Institute is a part of the Leavey School of Business, working to engage MBA students as well as other Santa Clara students in food, hunger, and agricultural issues through research and community outreach efforts.
