2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon
The School of Engineering is excited to partner with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Leavey School of Business to design and build a net-zero energy house for the prestigious U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. Santa Clara University will compete in its third Solar Decathlon and will join 19 other teams of universities and colleges from around the world. SCU's undergraduate engineering students will go up against some tough schools including Stanford, University of Southern California, and California Institute of Technology, but the students are excited to have this unparalleled opportunity to put their talents, education, and hearts to work on an enormous interdisciplinary project.

CSA Box Delivery Resumes in February
The Ignatian Center recently announced the return of CSA deliveries to the SCU campus on February 1st. Through its collaboration with the Catalan Family Farm, the Ignatian Center makes boxes of organic produce available to members of the university community and its neighbors. The program allows faculty, staff, and students to learn about sustainable agriculture and organic farming while it encourages them to eat locally and healthily. Boxes are delivered to Sobrato Hall on campus every other Wednesday, and each box includes a selection of seasonal vegetables that can feed about four adults per week. You can subscribe to receive a box every other week or just try it once. You pay ahead and pick your box up on delivery day. Because the intent behind CSA is for farmers to receive funds from subscribers early in the season so they can buy needed materials before the crops come in, CSA encourages paying in advance. Those who do so will receive a discount, which only applies to orders pre-paid during February.
Prices are $24.00 per box for all orders of 1-9 boxes. For all orders of 10 boxes or more, the price is $22.00 per box. The deliveries will continue every other Wednesday through the end of November 2012, so sign up soon! You must sign up the Monday before a delivery to receive an order that week.
Sunnyvale City Council Passes Single-use, Carryout Bag Ordinance
On December 6th, the Sunnyvale City Council passed the ordinance by a vote of 5 to 1. The ordinance bans light-weight plastic bags widely distributed at check-out counters. It also obliges retailers to charge 10 cents per single-use paper bag and mandates that those bags contain 40 percent post-consumer recycled paper. As of June 2012, the ordinance will take effect at over 90 retailers and food and beverage stores that have been contacted about this ban during the past two years. It will take effect at all remaining retailers in March 2013, and at that time, the ordinance will match San Jose's.
The efforts to enforce the ban are shared by many members of the Sunnyvale community including environmentally-friendly council members, city staff, informed residents, and members of the Chapter's Sunnyvale Cool Cities Team. They all worked together to move the process forward through electing greener candidates in previous campaigns, informing the public through outreach meetings, contacting the city council, and writing letters to the editor of the Sunnyvale Sun and San Jose Mercury.
