Comment Form

Add a simple comment form to any Commonspot page. The element can be configured to allow comments to be submitted anonymously, or require an SCU Groupwise or self-generated ID and password before comments can be submitted.

Firefox 3 Released

Firefox version 3 has just been released, and is available to download.  We've been testing early releases of this browser with Commonspot, and haven't encountered any problems specific to the new version.  Although Paperthin (the Commonspot vendor) hasn't officially certified Firefox 3 for Commonspot, it's been working fine in our tests.

Podcast RSS Feed

You can use the RSS Display element to include a podcast RSS feed, and display an embedded audio player for each of the podcast items.

Audio Player

A new element has been added to the Content Well element gallery category that will allow you to embed an audio file player in a Commonspot page.

Google Calendar

You can embed a Google Calendar in a Commonspot page using the Simple Text Block element.  Copy the Google Calendar HTML code into this element's text form, and your calendar content will be displayed.

Poll Widget

Add a simple, multiple-choice Poll to a Commonspot page.

Thumbnail images in homepage blog element

The blog element has been updated to allow home page news & events posts to display two images; a thumbnail image, optimized for the 65px x 45px dimensions allowed in the homepage news & events element, and a full size image for the full display of the blog post.  To include a thumbnail image, upload it to the Commonspot Image Gallery, following the instructions on the Blog authoring page.  The thumbnail image will be assigned the blog item ID as a keyword, followed by "tn".  For example, a blog post with the ID "12345" that includes a thumbnail image and a full size image would have two images uploaded, one with the keyword "12345" (full size) and one with the keyword "12345tn" for the thumbnail version.  The homepage element will display the thumbnail image if available, and will otherwise display the full size image resized to 65px x 45px.

The image displayed below has a companion thumbnail-sized image that would be displayed in its place in the homepage news & events element.

FAQ option for Bulleted List element

The Bulleted List element now has an option to display the list in a "frequently asked questions" format.  The list item titles are listed first, and each title links to the full item description below.  This can be useful not only for FAQ lists, but other lists with numerous items.  The Web Publishing Contact page includes an example of this list format.  The FAQ option is available for either the Directory List or Simple List rendering for this element.

Image slideshow option added to blog element

Using Commonspot's Blog element, you can display multiple images associated with a blog post as an image slideshow.  The standard options for displaying a single image or a table of thumbnail images are also available.

Commonspot blog element support for embedded media

The blog element now supports the display of audio and video content.  Enter the URL for an audio (mp3) or video (quicktime, swf, or flash video) in the enclosure field, and an embedded media player will be included in the display of the full blog post.

This is an example of an embedded audio file (a walking tour of the campus) that is hosted in iTunesU.
