A Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
At our November meeting, the Alumni Association Board of Directors discussed the University’s commitment to fostering a more diverse and inclusive environment. Stemming from that conversation, we feel it's essential to share SCU's ongoing efforts in this important area with all alumni. University President Michael E. Engh, S.J. recently expressed support for vulnerable individuals through a letter to campus as well as a statement from the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Faculty, staff, and students participated in a campus walkout in solidarity with undocumented students and a letter was published in The Santa Clara authored by SCU Alumni for Liberation to support students affected by recent bias incidents on campus. The Office of Multicultural Learning is hosting a series of Difficult Dialogues dedicated to discussions of identity and inclusion, and students continue to share their recommendations through ongoing Unity 4 efforts. The Alumni Association also continues to support and create safe and inclusive spaces for all SCU alumni. Opportunities for engagement include the Asian Pacific Islander, African American, and Chicano Latino Chapters and our growing LGBTQ+ Network. Across our nation and on our campus, Santa Clara University seeks to build unity and express care and concern for all members of our community, especially those who have experienced anything less than respect as a child of God.
