Associate Provost Global Engagement Update
Welcome to the September edition of the Associate Provost Global Engagement Update. The fall semester is underway for JST and the Law School and we have enjoyed welcoming our new international students who are already here. We are looking forward to the start of the fall quarter, as well. There are a number of opportunities to be involved with global programs this year. I would like to highlight our iExchange program, which pairs faculty and staff with international students to serve as cultural hosts for the year. It is a great opportunity to connect with members of our SCU community and learn about a new culture. Faculty and staff can sign-up through the link below. Please be sure to scroll to the bottom for events and deadlines to add to your calendar now. Thank you for all that you do to make SCU global!
Best,
Susan Popko
Associate Provost for International Programs
Register for the iExchange Program
Faculty and staff are encouraged to join SCU’s international student buddy program this academic year. Register online by the September 27 deadline. iExchange matches international students with SCU faculty and staff to provide cultural support and an introduction to U.S. culture. The program fosters intercultural exchange and provides international students a personal experience of American culture and “Bronco hospitality.” Learn more about iExchange on the Global Engagement website.
Students Interested in Global Programs?
For students interested in the global programs, it is never too early to learn about opportunities. Students are encouraged to explore education abroad through Global Engagement’s newly developed “Get Started Advising Series for Education Abroad and Global Programs.” The course launches in Camino on September 18 and students may register via Global Engagement’s Plan Now & Apply webpage. It will provide students with a comprehensive overview of questions to consider, eligibility requirements, and the application materials. Express Advising Hours start for Fall Quarter 2023 during Week 2.
Leading Programs Abroad for Faculty Info Session
Global Explorations is SCU’s faculty-led program that supports faculty in developing short-term programs abroad. Normally, programs are 3-weeks in the summer and courses are geared toward first and second year students. Teaching on a Global Explorations program provides faculty with an opportunity to gain experience teaching abroad and help students build stronger global competencies. Two information sessions will take place in October and faculty can sign up through our form to attend. Learn more about Global Explorations programs through the Global Engagement website.
International Students
Welcome our new fall international students. Through our International Student Welcome (ISW) Orientations we have welcomed 14 Law students (August 8), 14 JST students (August 23), and are preparing to welcome almost 300 graduate students (September 7) and over 100 undergraduates (September 13-15). We are excited to welcome undergraduate exchange students from our Jesuit and mission-aligned partner universities including University of Deusto (Spain), Australian Catholic University, and Sophia University (Japan). Reciprocal exchange programs have been paused since the start of the pandemic in Winter 2020 and we are happy to resume these programs.
Did you know? International students comprise approximately 1,600 students at SCU. See more details in the International Student Census PDF.
Congratulations to our Fall 2023 Students Abroad
Fall education abroad programs started in July with Southern Hemisphere programs, and will continue through December. We will have 335 students abroad in 15 countries across the world, including such locations as South Korea, New Zealand, Ecuador, and Austria. Students participate in high-impact opportunities as part of many programs abroad including research, language immersion, and community engagement work.
International Travel
Are you a faculty or staff member traveling abroad individually for research or work? Register Your Faculty/Staff Travel through the 1-Minute Travel Registry. This ensures faculty and staff are covered by SCU’s insurance.

Governmental Policy Updates
Simon Study Abroad Bill Introduced in Congress
Urge your lawmakers to cosponsor the Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Program Act. Constituent voices from Republican states and congressional districts are particularly important to this bill’s success. Thank you to all who have already taken action! Note that our system will automatically generate a thank you message if your elected officials have already cosponsored the bill.
