Purpose:
Santa Clara University, a Jesuit Catholic institution located in Silicon Valley, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Leavey School of Business. The Dean is responsible for the leadership and management of the School's faculty, students, and staff; responsibilities include strategic planning, curriculum, facilities, and budgeting. The Dean reports directly to the University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. As a member of the University's senior administrative team, the Dean also has a significant role in University-wide leadership.
I. The University and School
Santa Clara University, founded in 1851, is a leading Jesuit Catholic institution of higher education and is California's oldest institution of higher learning. Santa Clara offers a rigorous undergraduate curriculum in the arts and sciences, business, and engineering, and has nationally-recognized graduate programs in business, counseling psychology, education, engineering, law, and pastoral ministries. With 4,800 undergraduate students and almost 4,000 graduate students, Santa Clara is a diverse community of scholars, characterized by small classes and a commitment to a teaching-scholar faculty model.
The Leavey School of Business, founded in 1926, has approximately 1,400 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students, more than 65 full-time tenure-track faculty, and more than 35 dedicated staff members. The Leavey School of Business offers undergraduate degrees in seven different majors and graduate degrees for the MBA, Executive MBA, and MS in information systems.
II. Qualifications
- Record of academic and/or professional accomplishment appropriate for the position of Dean and for appointment as a tenured professor in the School.
- Commitment to excellence in business education and the Jesuit educational vision of developing leaders of professional competence, conscience, and compassion;
- Ability to articulate and implement a compelling vision for engaging the School and University with Silicon Valley and with national and international business communities;
- Experience in developing and supporting a vibrant environment for learning through teaching, faculty/student research, and interactions with alumni and industry partners;
- Ability to speak articulately for the School and University and engage diverse communities in dialogue;
- Ability to generate and apply resources in ways that will help realize the priorities of the School and University;
- Experience developing synergistic and strategic partnerships across disciplines on campus and with key external constituencies; and
- The intellectual qualities, character, and personal style that command the respect of faculty, students, staff, and the University's external constituencies.
III. Application Procedures
Applications and nominations are requested by October 15, 2008, but the search will remain open until the position is filled. Candidates should submit a letter of application summarizing their qualifications and how these qualifications speak to the needs of the position, a curriculum vitae, and the names of three references to:
