Purpose:

Overview of the Position: The Director of Study Abroad is responsible for providing results-oriented leadership to the Study Abroad and Exchange Program. S/he is responsible for managing Santa Clara's study abroad and exchange program portfolio and all aspects of the education abroad processes including outreach and advising; selection; orientation and participation; re-entry and assessment. This position is available at a time following the University adopting a Strategic Plan in 2011 which has prioritized Global Understanding and Engagement and the Director of Study Abroad will be a key player in planning and developing Santa Clara University's education abroad program in the context of the Strategic Plan. I. Responsibilities

  1. Maintains effective policies and procedures in keeping with professional best practices
  2. Maintains a data-driven approach to program portfolio management
  3. Develops and maintains excellent communication and working relationships with administrative units on campus including Student Affairs, Registrar, Financial Aid, Business Office and others
  4. Oversees communication plan for the Study Abroad and Exchange Program including website, printed publications and materials
  5. Incorporates and manages assessment into the overall practices of the office including a study abroad evaluation and periodic evaluation of special programs or learning outcomes, as needed
  6. Actively promotes study abroad for underrepresented students, underrepresented disciplines and in underrepresented geographic locations and collaborates with others on campus to increase participation in these areas
  7. Works with faculty to align the study abroad program portfolio with the University curriculum
  8. Develops new relationships with study abroad programs and international universities within the framework of overall institutional priorities
  9. Plans and projects budget progress and needs related to the study abroad program
  10. Develops and maintains organizational and data systems to achieve goals in keeping with institutional priorities and resources
  11. Develops and manages a five-year plan for study abroad
  12. Makes recommendations on policies in consultation with appropriate offices and committees
  13. Serves as a spokesperson for Study Abroad at Admission and other university events
  14. Represents the University at professional meetings, e.g., NAFSA, The Forum, etc. on a regular basis to insure on-going review and adherence to best practices in the field of international education
  15. Develops and manages an on-going process for academic program and health and safety monitoring abroad, including organizing regular overseas site visits with clear objectives and expectations for site visit reporting
  16. Reviews the Study Abroad and Exchange Program Emergency and Crisis Response Plan on a periodic basis, makes changes, as necessary, in keeping with professional best practices in risk management and emergency/crisis response, and communicates with relevant offices about those changes
  17. Supervises staff including an Assistant Director and Coordinator
  18. Other duties as assigned

II. Qualifications

Master's degree and a minimum of five years leadership experience in an education abroad office; demonstrated record of leadership in the field of international education through professional organizations such as The Forum, NAFSA, etc.; experience shaping the study abroad program portfolio in keeping with institutional needs; experience with curriculum integration; outstanding communication, management and organizational skills; the ability to work effectively with people at all levels of the University, nationally and internationally. Demonstrated excellent judgment managing crisis situations. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle matters with sensitivity and tact.
