Fourth Sunday: March 6

Vote with Your Dollar and Ballot

Damon Rideaux
Damon Rideaux discusses how he voted with knowledge this past week in many choices he made.

This week’s passage tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:20: “So we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” In order to represent Christ, we must present ourselves as kind, knowledgeable people. This ties into this week’s theme: vote with knowledge. This week’s Lenten challenges focused on being aware and choosing to be conscious of your choices and actions.

For me, I choose to be conscious of the places I shopped. I was a big supporter of brands like H&M and Topman. However, when I began to look closely about where I bought my clothing, I realized how unethical these companies were. Would Christ be okay with people being exploited so I could have a cheap t-shirt? Probably not.

I decided to find fair trade companies that made stylish clothing and considered ethics over profit. I found two sites that I liked—Kuyichi, a jean company, and Thread Harvest, an Australian company. Both companies were consciously trying to make a difference and follow the path of Christ by creating an industry that is not built on exploiting people. The Lenten challenges caused me to choose what was tolerable and what was intolerable. These decisions helped me to be an ambassador of Christ and find a fair trade place to buy jeans!
